Victory of Joan Ginther - mere luck or calculation?

People’s luck often causes both admiration and envy. People spread rumours that a lucky person achieves victory by fraudulent ways. So it happened with American resident Joan Ginther.
A woman managed to win four times a lottery prize for a total of more than $21 million, which is why rumours spread about her dishonesty.
Joan got first lucky in 1993. Then she won $5.4 million with the chance of a match 1 to 15,800,000. She decided to receive her first winnings by allowance payments for 19 years. The next time, fortune smiled at her after 13 years - in 2006. This time it has become richer for another $ 2 million. For the third time, in 2008 the winning lottery ticket brought her another $ 3 million. The fourth and for now the last Jackpot Joan Ginther hit in the summer of 2010 - she became richer for another $ 10 million.

Joan Ginther won all four prizes in the Texas Lottery and the first three winning tickets were bought in the same petrol station store in a small town called Bishop. The fourth ticket was bought in the supermarket of the neighbouring town. Suspicion is caused by the fact that many years have passed between the first and second win and Joan received the next three prizes within five years.

Journalists who were fascinated by the story of Joan Ginther's winnings conducted their own investigation. They found out that a woman has a Stanford University degree in statistics and for many years taught mathematics. These facts suggest that the success of the luckiest woman on the planet may not be accidental. There is an idea that the woman was able to somehow unravel the structure of the Texas Lottery, which helped her to win several times.
In the town of Bishop there are various rumours about Mrs Ginther's honesty. In particular, she is suspected of collusion with the owner of the same shop, that she allegedly bought all her winning tickets from him. We will never know if those suspicions are right.

The organizers of lotteries always try to be one step ahead of gifted people who are able to unravel their system, but one cannot take the mind from a person. This race between the lottery organizers and potential winners is endless. As for Joan Ginther and her success, the woman herself refuses comment on this. We won’t exclude the probability of mathematical calculations when choosing numbers on the tickets, but luck is obviously an undeniable fact.
