Indian lotteries.

India is one of the most populated countries in the world and there are its own local lotteries.
Any lottery that is not licensed by government is illegal, but despite the laws and regulations such lotteries exist.

One of the big lotteries is called Mataka. This lottery is held in the city of Mumbai and got popular in the mid 1970-ies.

Participation in different draws varies at the price, but the average ticket value is approximately 5 Indian rupees. You can buy tickets only in India in special outlets of lottery sales, such outlets are often found in large markets.

Despite the large population in India, whose population has already exceeded a mark of a billion people, not a lot of them play the lottery. This is due to the lottery taxes that are considered quite high in India. Poorer people cannot afford to play the lottery on a constant basis; usually it is the privilege of wealthy people.
Each Indian state conducts and controls its own lotteries. For example the state of Sikkim has the lottery, which is called Sikkim Playwin.

The Playwin game started in 2001 and quickly gained popularity. Tickets in this lottery cost about 10 Indian rupees, however you can win a pretty big prize.

The biggest win was recorded in 2006; the prize amounted to 178 million Indian rupees. The winner of this Jackpot was a resident of Calcutta and he bought just one ticket.

Interesting fact: In India there are many measures taken to reduce the birth rate, so the government came up with another one - if a man is ready to go for sterilization, he is given a lottery ticket in a special draw.

In such draws there are different special prizes, like motorcycles, washing machines and even cars. The amount of prizes reaches up to 400,000 US dollars; the winners are almost one third of those who got the tickets.
